CITIZEN KANE 64
EL RANCHO NIGHTCLUB
From a Citizen Kane-themed retro-style FPS based on an early scene from the film. The level is made up of a series of rooms based on an old club, as well as an underground secrion. The very beginning of the stage is made to trick the player into thinking the game is a straight adaptation of the film. The HUD is invisible and the player has no weapons.
Shortly into the level a very video-game-y laser fence blocks the way, showing that things aren't what they seem. When turning into a side room to collect a key, the player pulls out a pistol and the HUD appears. It's an FPS! From here the stage proceeds as a normal single player FPS in the style of something like Goldeneye. The blood effects are red, contrasting with the usual monochrome graphics.
There's one primary path to the goal filled with enemies, traps, and mild platforming, but also several shortcuts. For instance, the player can discover a secret passage through the air ducts early on that leads to a perfect sniping angle for a room of enemies filled with explosive gas canisters.
The level takes some twists and turns, with the player at one point ending up in an underground ancient temple where they must solve a puzzle to proceed. After riding a moving platform up into the bathroom, they exit to the end of the level. This stage organically teaches the player the basics of the game as they proceed, but also contains hints via spoken dialogue.
